August 20, 2009 12:01 PM | Posted By: Chris Pfitzer

The project Diagnostic E-Learning Trajectories Approach (DELTA) applied to Rational Number Reasoning for Grades 3-8 recently received a supplemental grant of $350,000 to their previously funded 5-year, $1.65 million grant from the National Science Foundation to continue their work in rational number reasoning.

The project develops a diagnostic system for teachers to use in assessing their 3rd-8th grade students’ understanding and knowledge of rational number reasoning. The purpose is to identify students’ difficulties in understanding six key clusters of concepts and skills and to investigate the diagnostic system’s effects on student and teacher learning in relation to state standards, assessments, and curricular programs. The six areas include, understanding equipartitioning, multiplicative/division space, from fractions to ratio/proportion and rates, rectangular area and volume, decimals and percents, and similarity and scaling.

Dr. Jere Confrey, Senior Research Fellow at the Friday Institute for Educational Innovation and Joseph D. Moore Distinguished Professor of Mathematics Education is the project’s Principal Investigator. Dr. Alan Maloney, Senior Research Fellow at the Friday Institute is the Project Coordinator and Senior Research Scientist.
