Wednesday October 7, 2009 | 9:00 AM - 10:00 AM | Collaboratory Commons

Please join us for the next Brown Bag seminar of the Fall semester. The seminar will be held on Wednesday, October 7 in the Collaboratory Commons at the Friday Institute on NC State's Centennial Campus. Refreshments will be served at 8:30am and the seminar will begin at 9:00am. Please feel free to bring colleagues and students along with you. The speaker will be Dr. Katie Makar, senior lecturer in Mathematics Education at the University of Queensland in Brisbane, Australia. Her presentation is entitled "Inquiry-based Teaching in Mathematics and Statistics in Australian Primary Schools: Findings from a Four-year Research Study.”

Dr. Makar’s research focus is in two areas: teachers' ongoing learning of inquiry-based teaching and students' informal inferential reasoning in statistics.  She has two nationally funded grants to understand teachers' experiences and the supports needed in shifting to inquiry-based practices over time.

Dr. Makar received her Ph. D. in Mathematics Education from the University of Texas at Austin in 2004.  In 2007, she received the Early Career Award for Excellence in Research from the Mathematics Education Research Group of Australia.
