SMART for Teachers: Science and Mathematics Achievement Through enRiched Technology for Teachers

SMART for Teachers has the overall goal of defining, stimulating, and supporting innovative classroom practices in rural, eastern North Carolina public schools. Our grant partners are Bertie Middle School and Chowan Middle School. The project introduces middle school teachers to technologies embedded in mathematics and science curriculum materials. The inquiry-based materials employ handheld probeware, document cameras, mimios, and software to collect student-generated data for mathematics and science learning. The project team works with “coaches” at each school and employs Elluminate and school-year meetings to provide technical support and pedagogical assistance for sustained impact.  Reform-based practices are being studied, as well as the impact of teacher recognition and school-based learning communities on adoption of new technologies.

This project builds upon the work of 21CTL begun in 2006 with Weldon City, Halifax County, Roanoke Rapids, Northampton County, Granville County, and Franklin County School Systems.
