2025 MSEN Day: Inspiring Future STEM Leaders

On April 26, 2025, 112 middle and high school students gathered at NC State’s Centennial Campus to compete in STEM-focused academic challenges during this year’s MSEN Day, hosted by the North Carolina Mathematics and Science Education Network Pre-College Program (NC-MSEN PCP). The event included students from across the state of North Carolina from three MSEN program sites on UNC system campuses, including North Carolina State University, University of North Carolina at Charlotte and Winston-Salem State University. Students participated in events such as math and science competitions, hands-on engineering challenges, oratorical presentations and quiz bowls—all designed to ignite curiosity and build skills in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
MSEN Day is the signature event of the NC-MSEN Pre-College Program, which serves students from diverse backgrounds in grades 6 through 12 with a focus on STEM. The NC State chapter, housed at the Friday Institute for Educational Innovation, partners with school districts in Northeastern and Central North Carolina to provide enrichment courses, career exposure and information on college admissions and scholarships. The program aims to prepare students for success in four-year college STEM programs through academic support and engaging, real-world learning opportunities.
“MSEN Day is always so empowering and motivating to see all types of students competing in a variety of STEM events,” said Braska Williams, NC-MSEN PCP director at the Friday Institute. “We are inspiring the next generation of STEM professionals!”
This year’s MSEN Day, held on NC State’s Centennial Campus, united three UNC System schools for a STEM competition with a goal of celebrating brilliance, fostering innovation and inspiring the next generation of scientific leaders through the spirit of collaboration and challenge. The day not only showcased academic excellence but also celebrated the community of educators, volunteers and families who support students on their journey to becoming the next generation of engineers, scientists and technology leaders.
“Beyond academics, the event plays a vital role in building self-esteem and confidence,” said Victor Mack, UNC-Charlotte NC-MSEN PCP director. “Our students left MSEN Day inspired and empowered, with a renewed sense of purpose and a stronger belief in their ability to succeed in STEM. Events like this underscore the importance of early exposure to STEM and reinforce our commitment to guiding students toward majors and careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.”
