RALEIGH, NC — The Learning Analytics and Data Science (LEADS) team at the Friday Institute for Educational Innovation has partnered with Chatham County Schools to study chronic absenteeism and its impacts on student success. Funded by a $52,000 grant from the University of North Carolina Collaboratory, the project aims to develop data-driven insights and interventions to improve student attendance and outcomes.

With chronic absenteeism posing a significant challenge to student achievement, LEADS Research Associate James Birkett and Senior Director Shaun Kellogg will work closely with Chatham County Schools to examine attendance patterns and identify key barriers that prevent students from engaging fully in their education. This research aligns with the North Carolina Practitioner Network’s goals, supported by the North Carolina Collaboratory, which strives to address pressing educational issues through collaboration between schools, researchers and policymakers.

“Chronic absenteeism is detrimental to students’ academic performance and long-term success,” said Kellogg. “Our work will explore effective strategies developed by school teams to help students stay engaged and thrive academically, making a meaningful difference for schools in Chatham County and beyond.”

This work is part of the North Carolina Practitioner Network, led by the UNC School of Education, which brings together education professionals to find research-based solutions to challenges facing districts and schools. This collaborative initiative enhances research capacity and fosters evidence-based practices to drive improvements across the state.
