Summer Discussion Series on Data Science Education in K-12 and College
Gather at the Friday Institute on the following dates to participate in discussions with like-minded folks at other institutions as we collectively consider interesting ideas related to improving data science education for middle school, high school, and college students. We will be joining live webinars sponsored by the Concord Consortium led by thought-leaders in data science education, and then have a local discussion afterwards.
All meeting held at the Friday Institute in the Nortel A room. Bring your lunch!

Cliff Konold of SRRI Education will lead a discussion entitled “Modeling as a core component of structuring data” based on an upcoming article (Konold, Finzer, & Kreetong, in press), which describes research on student understanding of and ability to organize complex data for analysis. We expect lively discussion with Cliff’s facilitation.

Hollylynne Lee of NC State will lead a discussion about using multivariate “big” data with middle and high school students and what this implies for preservice teacher education. She will share information about the current ESTEEM project aimed at creating, disseminating, and examining use of online modules for secondary mathematics teacher preparation in statistics.

Tim Erickson will lead a discussion on data science in high school settings. NO face-to-face meeting at the Friday Institute, but you can register and participate in the webinar here
Tuesday August 8th 11:45am-2:15pm
Amelia McNamara from Smith College will discuss data science in collegiate settings. More details to be announced later.
