Greetings! I am Dr. Hiller Spires, a Professor and Sr. Research Fellow at the Friday Institute and NC State’s College of Education. We are thrilled to have 8 teachers from Beijing Royal School enrolled in our New Literacies & Global Learning graduate program at NC State’s College of Education. The teachers are taking a class called Selected Topics in Chinese and American Education. In this class, we will blog about what we are learning. The first book we are reading and discussing is Cultural Foundations of Learning: East and West, by Dr. Jin Li from Harvard University. Stay tuned as we learn more about Chinese and American education–how education is similar and different in the two countries.

The New Literacies Collaborative conducted the New Literacies Teacher Leader Institute at BRS in 2010 and again in 2013. We have been partnering with BRS in several areas—teacher professional development and student teaching. Additionally, we started the NC Summit on US/China Education in 2008 and it continues to be offered every other year. Check out this year’s Summit, which will be held at the Friday Institute on September 4.
