As Kyrie Harmon embarked on the first day of her high school journey at the Northwest School of the Arts on Tuesday, she has one hope for the four years ahead of her.

“More teacher-on-student interaction; less ‘Here’s a computer, have fun.’”

Artificial intelligence tools, used both in the classroom and student homework, have become nearly ubiquitous across K-12 education in North Carolina and the country.

A recent national research study from Common Sense Media found 63% of teens had used AI to complete their schoolwork; nearly 40% of those surveyed, however, felt like they were missing out by an over-reliance on artificial intelligence in their education.

“Decision-making and human judgment can be augmented by these technologies but should never be replaced by these technologies,” cautioned Krista Glazewski, executive director of the Friday Institute for Educational Innovation at NC State.
