Fall 2021 Online Professional Learning Now Open for Registration
Free high-quality online professional learning courses for educators are now open for registration for the fall 2021 session, which launches Oct. 4. The Friday Institute for Educational Innovation is offering four courses that cover a variety of topics aimed to support educators in their practice.
Every course is designed with educators in mind. Courses are self-directed, peer-supported, project-based and allow for blended learning opportunities. They are flexible and can be accessed at any time, in any place and on any device.

Build your own foundational understanding of social and emotional learning (SEL) with this course on how SEL skills are essential to student learning. Participants will also see examples of how others are teaching these skills, learn strategies to apply to their classroom and share ideas with colleagues in their school, community and around the globe.
Deepen your understanding of learning differences and their impact on student learning in this course. Participants will learn how to expand their knowledge related to key constructs of learning differences, use actionable strategies to impact the learning experience of their students, cultivate a growth mindset related to learning differences and use technology tools to support student learning differences at a distance.
This course will help participants more effectively prepare students with limited English proficiency in elementary and middle grades with the skills they need to be successful in school. “Teaching K-8 English Learners” focuses on the foundational skills that enable English learners to understand academic vocabulary, integrate oral and written English language into content areas, develop written language skills and participate in small-group interventions for literacy and English learner development. The course draws on the recommendations of the IES “Teaching Academic Content and Literacy to English Learners in Elementary and Middle School Practice Guide.”
The “Teaching Math to Young Children” online professional learning course will help participants develop a deeper understanding of developmental progressions in early math, investigate common methods of progress monitoring that inform instruction and use classroom activities and teaching structures to support young children to view and describe their worlds mathematically. This course is organized around the IES “Teaching Math to Young Children Practice Guide.”

“Amplifying Statistics and Data Science in Classrooms” is a new set of modules that help educators develop strategies for using an investigation cycle to teach statistics and data science, ignite students’ interest in real world data investigations with technology and emphasize inferential reasoning through posing different types of investigative questions.
The “Foundations of Learner Agency” module shows participants how to build their own foundational understanding of learner agency, how it plays out in the classroom, the conditions that foster learner agency for each and every student, and why learner agency is of particular importance for students of color and historically marginalized students.
“Learner Agency in Practice” provides participants with the opportunity to directly apply their understanding of learner agency to the classroom and learn more about what students need to engage fully in agency in the classroom.

This course provides professional development and support for teachers of the BJC high school computer science curriculum.
