Spring 2021 Online Professional Learning Courses Now Open for Registration
Free high-quality online professional learning courses for educators are now open for registration for the spring 2021 session, which starts March 1. The Friday Institute for Educational Innovation is offering six courses that cover a variety of topics aimed to support educators in their practice, especially as it relates to remote teaching and learning.
Every course is designed with educators in mind. Courses are self-directed, peer-supported, project-based and allow for blended learning opportunities. They are flexible and can be accessed at any time, in any place and on any device.

This course will help participants more effectively prepare students with limited English proficiency in elementary and middle grades with the skills they need to be successful in school. Teaching K-8 English Learners focuses on the foundational skills that enable English learners to understand academic vocabulary, integrate oral and written English language into content areas, develop written language skills and participate in small-group interventions for literacy and English learner development. The course draws on the recommendations of the IES Teaching Academic Content and Literacy to English Learners in Elementary and Middle School Practice Guide.
The Teaching Math to Young Children online professional learning course will help participants develop a deeper understanding of developmental progressions in early math, investigate common methods of progress monitoring that inform instruction and use classroom activities and teaching structures to support young children to view and describe their worlds mathematically. This course is organized around the IES Teaching Math to Young Children Practice Guide.
These research-based strategies are focused beyond the COVID-19 crisis and will support participants in bringing remote learning to the classroom whenever it is needed. During this course, participants will:
- Learn best practices, resources and strategies to set their remote learning classrooms up for success
- Get focus on supporting students with limited connectivity, learning differences and other unique needs
- Develop an action plan for their remote learning classrooms
- Foundational Coaching Practice for the Digital Age (formerly Coaching Digital Learning)
Coaching educators to create digital learning environments is a challenging, important and highly collaborative role. Individuals who play this role are instrumental in cultivating a digital, personalized blended learning culture within their school, district and/or state. This course allows participants to learn along with colleagues from other schools and districts to enhance digital learning content knowledge and further develop coaching strategies.

Build your own foundational understanding with this course of how social and emotional learning (SEL) skills are essential to student learning. Participants will also see examples of how others are teaching these skills, learn strategies to apply to their classroom, and share ideas with colleagues in their school, community and around the globe.

This course provides professional development and support for teachers of the BJC high school computer science curriculum.
