LCI Storytelling Art Gallery

Through a partnership with the North Carolina Museum of Art, adolescents from CORRAL Riding Academy participated in an art therapy and writing program in 2022-2023. This art gallery includes their art, artist biographies and artist statements. This gallery was presented at the North Carolina Museum of Art on March 23, 2023.

The Best Part of Me

After reading a mentor text and discussing the best parts of ourselves, the artists captured the best parts of themselves through photography and writing.

Main Art Pieces

Caprice

A dark black background with stars and pompoms.

Hi, I am Caprice. I am 16 years old. I like to create different images of random things on my laptop, like designs. I learned most of my online stuff from one of my freshman year 1st semester classes, Digital Design and Animation. I’m really good at extreme mental math and I have a very good fashion sense.

Macy

A woman with long red hair holds and white cat with a partially brown face and ears
Macy

I am in 10th grade. I want to study to be a social worker. I enjoy painting, riding horses and watching Grey’s Anatomy. A few people who motivate me are Jesus, my mom and dad, and my grandpa. Also, someone who motivates me is my grandma who passed away back in 2021. A few of the accomplishments that I am proud of are getting baptized in 2022 and being adopted in May of 2022 by my aunt and uncle who are now my two favorite people in the world. I believe it’s never too late to accept Jesus because even in your darkest moments, he’s always there!

Artist Statement

Many people believe that animals can’t help you because they aren’t people who can talk to you, but Cosmo was the only person there to comfort me through everything when no one else was.

Teddie

A painting with a brown background, a Black woman in a white dress and afro holds a brown cat. Papers surround her body.

Adriana

A painting of a starry night with a dozen stars prominently featured at the top.

Hey, My name is Adriana. I am 13 years old, and I am in 7th grade. I go to Neuse River Middle School. My favorite subject is reading! I read every night when I am laying in bed. My favorite color is royal blue and my favorite sports are soccer and gymnastics. I am a very active person and enjoy whatever sports come my way. I like to play football. I can throw the ball very well and run as fast as I possibly can! I really want to go to Paris when I am older because I think it is a beautiful place to go and how life changing it could be to me.

Artist Statement

I painted this drawing because I like to look at the stars at night. In my perspective, the stars talk to me or help me calm down. If I am feeling stressed or tense about something, looking at the stars at night helps me take deep breaths and they calm me down. So, I drew this picture to help me remember that, when I am feeling tense or stressed about something, laying down on the grass at night just looking at the stars, I notice a lot that all my stress goes away. Then I feel much better. It also looks like a galaxy almost and when I look at the galaxy, I notice all the beautiful colors there are and how wonderful it is to have them.

Ainsley

A painting of a New York city skyline with the dark blues of a sky as the focal point.

My name is Ainsley, and I am in 8th grade. I am 14 years old, and I go to Neuse River Middle School. I love to take pictures of nature. My favorite sports are basketball and volleyball. My favorite color is baby blue. And my favorite shoe wear are crocs and nike.

Artist Statement

I did the New York skyline because I love New York, and I have been wanting to go there for 4 years now. I think it is a very beautiful place to visit. I did this painting because I want wishes to still come true. When I was working on this painting, I told myself I will someday go to New York and never give up on my dreams.

Dr. Dee

A painted black box featuring an astronaut in a space suit walking around an outer space environment with stars and rocks.

Sa’Rye

A poster board featuring various cartoon characters including Sponge Bob, Doug, and the Rugrats.

My name is Sa’Rye. Some things I enjoy doing include reading, decorating, crafting and making smoothies. In the future, I hope to study naturopathic medicine, general health, and large animals.

Nostalgia: a sentimental longing or wistful affection for the past, typically for a period or place with happy personal associations. It’s always nice to let out a nostalgic sigh and remember the fun things, especially some of the shows that you grew up watching. It’s always a nice place to revisit what we used to enjoy as children or when we were younger then we are now. I pulled these drawings from my childhood, these characters are what made my childhood fun and something to remember, and this is why I present them to you.

Joy

A purple box with stars painted on the top that holds two rocks painted as planets resting on a black sand bottom.

Aaliyah

A round painting featuring a planet with a ring around it surrounded by stars.

Hello my name is Aaliyah. I am 12 years old and I am in 6th grade. I love doing horse-back riding, art, throwing the football around with Dr. Dee, and many other things that would take all day to list. The biggest challenge I face is in school with ELA (English Language Arts). I am looking forward to working up to the jumping skills for horse-back riding. I am also looking forward to going to 7th grade. The subjects I do best in are science, math 6 , social studies, health and PE, and nand. My goal is to finish level B by the end of the year so I go onto level C so I can work and focus more on jumping skill. Something I have achieved this year was making A-B honor roll all year so far. Something you might not know about me is that I want to be a gymnast, an equestrian (someone who works with horses) and I want to be on a football team for the NFL.

Artist Statement

When I was making this painting I was going through a hard time mentally. I was having a hard time focusing at school, at home, basically everywhere. When I made this painting I was inspired by how spaced out I had been. As soon as I was told about us doing this awesome activity I instantly knew I wanted to do something to do with space in it. The name spaced out came from how spaced out I had been but now thinking about it being spaced out is my weakness and strength. It is my weakness because it makes it hard to focus in school but it is also my strength because it helps me dream bigger than I already do and it helps me look forward to my future, especially with CORRAL’s help.

Haleigh

A collection of multicolored round resin shapes that have a space theme to them, featuring stars and sparkles.

My name is Haleigh. My favorite sport is track, and I love listening to Taylor Swift. When I grow up I want to be either a nurse or teacher. My favorite subjects are English and science.

Artist Statement

I did my project with resin art. Everyone I did was different. Just like people, no one person is the same.

DJ

A pencil drawn photo of a girl with long hair.

Patricia

A painted human heart.

Stone

A purple box holding three white circular objects, similar to stones, in them.

Jo

A painting with a white box and a blue border. Inside the white box are images including a heart, the dollar symbol and a crown.

Hello, my name is Joanna and I am 13 years old, turning 14 in July. I went to foster care at the age of 11 in 6th grade and right now I am in the adoption process. I am kind, hardworking, creative (when I want to be), and my personality type is Turbulent Adventure (ISFP-T). I like drawing/doodling, art, reading, cats and animals, writing, blankets, stuffed animals, plushies, flowers, and hoodies. I hope you enjoy this as much as I made it!

Artist Statement

The title of the artwork is Dear Future Me. I used watercolors for this project. My project represents the things I want to achieve in the future, also things I want to improve, continue, and some background information about me.

Jaiden

A painting of a skyline with stores and lights.

Jaiden is a hard working student; she always tries to have A’s and B’s in school. She has been in CORRAL since she was in 7th grade in 2021. When she first came to CORRAL she worked with Alchemy then she switched to Giselle, and now she works with Noel! She is on level B horse skills and 2 more until she gets to C.

I love going out and being with my friends. I love getting to go to new places and see new things. My biggest motivation is to graduate high school and go to college. My biggest accomplishment was getting my grades to all A’s and B’s because a few years ago I thought I could never do that. Another big one is being the first girl at CORRAL to pass off level A horse skills the fastest! And even though I’m not the best at it, math is my favorite subject because you’re always doing something in it.

Blessings

A painting featuring a cloud/cotton border, a night sky with stars, and two people flying in the air.

Jay/Jade

A painting with a blue background, red lines, and a human figure.

An artist and a poet. Hi! I’m Jay/Jade, I’m gender-fluid, creative, and thoughtful. I love to do mixed media art! As I grow up, I’m thinking about becoming a tattoo artist and photographer. Being able to do art with LCI has been amazing, and it helps me for the future too! Being a CORRAL girl has also helped me get ready for my own future, being able to learn skills now as a teen to help me when I become an adult. Even now I’m starting to draw tattoos for people!

The Blood Rune Stitches

I started with a piece I was having trouble with. I knew that I didn’t have time to restart it either. As I kept getting the painting wrong, I would try to paint over it trying and trying. Along with anger and grief and acceptance. I finally made an art piece I was okay with. Through the anger I made a hole in my canvas. In grief, I realized I didn’t have time to make new things. With acceptance I stitched the canvas back as making a new piece of art. A nickname for this is;

The woe of closure =

{The grief of a lost acceptance.}

My original idea was to paint an ocean with moonlight shining down on it, but in the spur of the moment I punched the canvas but now I see it as sometimes you have to stitch up your world back together. One stitch at a time. It’s gonna take time but in the end your/its still together just a tad bit different. Even after everyone stabs you and your bleeding you can still stand together with the scars of the stitches. The stitches/scars represent or show that everyone has gone through something in their life and had to put themselves together again but shows as something new and beautiful.

The arm represents the struggles of stitching/sewing your life back together as it holds the needle and thread.

{As I was putting the piece together I noticed the stitches kinda looked like runes put together.}

{URUZ: strength, power, energy, endurance, creative force.
If you are facing challenges, Uruz is a reminder that you have the strength to persevere, as well defend yourself.
NAUTHIZ: need, necessity, scarcity absence, restriction, have patience
Nauthiz signifies hardship in the form of one’s needs not being met. The rune represents the ‘need-fire”.
ISA: obstacles, standstill, stagnation, delay, coldness.
Isa also indicates delay, and it’s best to accept this as a reality in your situation, rather than pushing against it. To keep moving forward
LAGUZ: water, flow intuition the unconscious, psychic ability, growth.
 If you’re being tossed around in the emotional waters of a situation, laguz advises you to realize your resistance and go with the flow. Follow your gut.}

Lex

A box featuring grass, a night sky and various neon colors and shapes.

My favorite thing in school right now is my dance class because I have always loved to dance. Some of my favorite hobbies are drawing, painting, dancing, and singing, so I hope that my career when I’m older has something to do with all of those things. Some of the different kinds of art I like to make are sketches or painting.

Artist Statement

The title of my piece is The Secret Garden. This piece of artwork was inspired by my love of moss, and the fact that I love the outside. I created my piece by taking a box and then gluing moss and random stuff to make it pretty. The big idea is moss and bugs. My final thought is I hope you like my moss too.

Dixie

Two pieces, both featuring moss and ceramic objects.
Dixie

Hi everyone my name is Dixie, and I’m 17 and in 10th grade. I made my art the way I did because I felt like showing everyone what I enjoy making and what makes me happy. All of my art shows how I am creative. I love to show how creative I am, everyone always says you’re so creative or I love how you make your art and I wanted to share that with everyone.

Artist Statement

What inspired my art was the people around. I’ve realized that being around people makes me feel inspired and creative. Being creative and flexible is what I’m best at, sort of like my super power. With one of my art displays, I had one idea in mind but then realized that I wanted to go in a different direction. It still turned out beautifully, teaching me that even when things do not go as planned it can still turn out good or beautiful in this case.

The name of one of my projects is under the sea. Another one of my projects is called mossy lake.

Isa

A painting of a night sky, a cliff and a pink blossomed tree on the edge of the cliff.

My name is Isa. I am 16 years old. I am in the 10th grade and one of my favorite subjects is math. I am proud to be in the place I am now because I haven’t always been my best and I’m doing better. My work today is just a representation of a beautiful tree that probably went through a lot to get to the place it is now. It faces obstacles like humans do to get where they wanna be in life.

Artist Statement

This piece is a blossom tree. It’s a representation of growth and it shows the obstacles trees have to face to blossom just like humans have to face to blossom into who they want to become.

Kylie

A painting with a purple background with a white bottom. Flowers and fluffy pompoms fill the canvas.

I am Kylie. I hope to study art when I get older. I enjoy art. The artist, Vincent Van Gogh, inspires me.

Artist Statement

My horse makes me want to be in a horse show. I drew these photos to tell people that horses can be fun to ride. I like that my horse comforts me.

Jasleen

A painting with a multicolored background of white, yellow, purple blue, orange and pink. Flowers are scattered around the canvas.

My name is Jasleen and I ride horses and my horse’s name is Maya.

Vivian

A painting featuring a boat anchor and text.

Hi my name is Vivian. I am an early graduate of the class of 2023. I officially signed for the US Navy, and I ship off in July. My life is changing hopefully for the better, and I’m incredibly excited and also very proud of myself. I’ve had a rocky road, but I feel my life is smoothing out. I wish luck to all my sisters at CORRAL and want to say THANK YOU to every single person involved in CORRAL Riding Academy, past, present and future.

Artist Statement

My art piece was based on what my future holds. Said piece represents my career in the Navy and all of my journeys to come.

Luka

A round painting featuring a night sky with shooting stars and pastel multicolored images of trees.

My name is Luka, and I’m 16. I hope to be an illustrator and art teacher in the future. My favorite thing to do is learn about new ideas and ways to do art, and I hope to teach people those things I’ve learned in the future!

Artist Statement

My project is how I see the world. I feel spaced out all the time. I see all the colors of the world as crazy. I see the wide picture and I wanted to put this all in the piece. Every star and every piece of glitter were made to make my world seem bright and blurry. I wish to help others make the same connection to their life and their art.
