What is PATHS?
Artificial intelligence (AI) is reshaping how students learn and how teachers teach. Most schools lack a reliable way to understand what that shift actually looks like in their own classrooms.
PATHS is a research-based student survey developed by the Friday Institute for Educational Innovation at NC State University as part of AI with the FI. PATHS is updated for an AI-integrated world, capturing how students and teachers use AI tools, how students navigate and evaluate AI-generated content, and where students feel confident or uncertain about working alongside these technologies.
The result is a clearer picture of your school’s technology landscape, grounded in student perspectives.
What it Measures: A Window into your School’s AI Landscape
The PATHS survey captures interconnected dimensions of the student experience:

- How students use AI
- How teachers use AI
- Student comfort, judgment and confidence with AI
- How AI affects student learning
Why it Matters
Student voice, captured. PATHS surfaces perspectives that rarely make it into school planning conversations: how students actually engage with AI in and out of the classroom.
